GARAN label dos and don'ts from the Commission guidelines

All rules for the EU GARAN label from the Commission guidelines, grouped by theme: editable fields, duration, size, colour, QR code and permitted use.

Published September 6, 2026 · 4 min read

The European Commission published practical guidelines for the GARAN label in April 2026. They contain a list of dos and don’ts. This guide groups them by theme so you can check a label in a minute. The generator enforces most of them automatically; the rest depend on how you place the label.

Key point: Change only the three editable fields, keep every fixed element and proportion untouched, and use the label only for a producer’s free guarantee of durability that covers the entire good for more than two years.

Editable fields

Do

  • Use the official Commission template.
  • Change only the three editable fields: duration, producer name and model identifier.

Don’t

  • Don’t change the typography of fixed or editable elements: font, weight, style or size.
  • Don’t add logos, icons, text or any other element.
  • Don’t translate, shorten or replace the fixed texts.

The generator writes the brand and model into the official slots at the prescribed 9 pt size. Text that would not fit is flagged instead of being shrunk.

Duration

Do

  • Enter the duration in whole years (3, 5, 10) or half years with a decimal comma (2,5; 4,5).
  • Use a duration longer than two years; 2,5 is the shortest value.

Don’t

  • Don’t use months, weeks or other decimals such as 4,1.
  • Don’t use the label for a guarantee of two years or less.

See how to enter the guarantee duration.

Size and proportions

Do

  • Keep the original proportions when scaling.
  • Print the label at 95 × 100 mm or larger.
  • Test the label on the actual medium, whether screen, packaging or shelf tag, to check for pixelation, missing elements or colour shifts.

Don’t

  • Don’t stretch, crop, distort or fold the label in a way that affects readability.
  • Don’t cut off the translation strip; it is an integral part of the label.
  • Don’t alter or delete the border line or the inner separator.
  • Don’t change the spacing or alignment of elements.

Colour

Do

  • Use RGB files for digital display and CMYK files for print.
  • Use the colour version online; it is mandatory there.
  • Use colour or black and white in physical shops.

Don’t

  • Don’t change the colours.
  • Don’t apply filters, effects or transparency.

Do

  • Keep the QR code at least 2 × 2 cm in print and make sure it is scannable.
  • Online, add a clickable link to the same page as the QR code.

Don’t

  • Don’t move, resize or edit the QR code.
  • Don’t replace it with your own QR code or a different destination.

Nested display

Do

  • Online, you may use the nested strip, provided it expands to the full label on the first click, roll-over or touch.
  • Accompany the strip with accessible text.

Don’t

  • Don’t print the nested strip; it exists only for online use.
  • Don’t hide the full label behind more than one interaction.

Permitted use

Do

  • Use the label only for a producer’s free guarantee of durability that covers the entire good for more than two years.
  • Display it before the consumer is bound by the contract: on the product page, before the order and in the confirmation email online, and prominently next to the product in store.
  • You may use it in banners, carousels, emails, third-party placements, video, flyers and leaflets, if it refers to a product that is actually covered.

Don’t

  • Don’t use the label for other types of commercial guarantees: partial, paid, seller’s or two years or less.
  • Don’t present it in a way that suggests all products in a banner are covered when they are not.
  • Don’t put several models on one label; generate one label per model.

FAQ

The generator flagged my model name as too long. Can I reduce the font?

No. The typography of editable elements is fixed at 9 pt. Shorten the model identifier instead, for example by dropping a marketing suffix, as long as the label still connects unambiguously to the model.

Can I add my company logo next to the label?

Next to it, yes, with clear space between. Inside the label, no. Nothing may be added to the label itself.

Can I use the black-and-white label online?

No. Online, the colour version is mandatory. Black and white is allowed only in physical shops.
