About the label

What is the EU GARAN label?

The GARAN label is the EU harmonised label for the commercial guarantee of durability. It is a fixed, language-neutral design for the point of sale. It shows that the producer guarantees a specific product for a stated number of years at no extra cost.

The label also reminds consumers that the legal guarantee of conformity applies. It becomes mandatory on 27 September 2026 across the EU, online and in physical shops.

When is the label mandatory?

The label must be displayed when all five conditions apply:

  • the producer, not the retailer, offers a commercial guarantee of durability within the meaning of Article 17 of Directive (EU) 2019/771;
  • it is offered at no additional cost to the consumer;
  • it covers the entire good, not just a component;
  • it lasts longer than two years;
  • the producer has made that information available to the trader.

The trader then displays the label prominently before the consumer is bound by the contract. Traders are not expected to search for such guarantees; the obligation starts when the producer communicates one.

Work through the five-question checklist.

Who displays it?

Traders display the label in physical shops and online so that it is clear which product benefits from the guarantee. Producers may also place it on the product or its packaging.

Five elements are fixed: the GARAN title with tick mark, the legal-guarantee shield, the QR code to the Your Europe portal, the calendar symbol and the strip with "producer guarantee in years" in all 24 EU languages.

Only three fields are editable: the duration, the producer's name and the model identifier. The generator changes nothing else.

Online rules

For contracts concluded through an online interface the label must be in colour and legible at default size. A nested display is allowed: a compact strip with the number of years that expands to the full label on the first click, roll-over or touch.

Add accessible text to the strip and a clickable link to the same destination as the QR code. The Commission expects the label on the product page, again directly before the order is placed, and in the confirmation email.

Offline rules

In physical shops the label may be in colour or black and white and must not be smaller than 95 × 100 mm. At that size the translations are 7 pt, brand and model 9 pt and the number of years 80 pt.

The QR code must be at least 2 × 2 cm and scannable with an ordinary phone. Larger sizes are fine if the whole label is scaled proportionally. The nested strip is not allowed in print.

What the label must not be used for

The label is reserved for one specific kind of guarantee. Do not use it for:

  • guarantees covering only part of a product or a single component;
  • paid guarantees, extended warranties or insurance sold with the good;
  • guarantees of two years or less;
  • any other commercial guarantee offered by the seller or producer.

Such guarantees can still be offered and described in the guarantee statement, just without the GARAN label. See the full list of dos and don'ts.
